What is PDF-XChange Viewer

PDF XChange Viewer is a sleek and intuitive PDF viewer-editor tool that makes reading and working with PDFs easy and fun. Best of all, it's free!

THE PDF XCHANGE VIEWER: AN OVERVIEW

PDFs are great. Unlike other document types and formats, they preserve an original document's exact formatting and contents, which means that you can use them to confidently showcase work where form is every bit as important as function. This is true even if the document or file in question contains photo, audio or video elements. The trouble is, creating PDFs in a standalone application is often much more of a chore than it ought to be. Many PDF creator/editor applications seem frozen in the 1990s - they're ugly looking, slow and error-prone, or simply lack the functionality required to perform the job for which they were intended. Sometimes, the truly unfortunate user will end up with a real lemon possessed of all three of these drawbacks! Fortunately for everyone, the PDF XChange Viewer is a tool which does one thing - it allows users to edit PDFs, and does it very well.

Those interested in what the XChange Viewer can do in terms of viewing a PDF will be happy to learn that little more could be asked of the tool. The interface is a breeze to use, as are navigation and search functions. Viewing layout options are expansive, and users can expect the tool to display a wide variety of PDF orientations beautifully.

The editing features present in the PDF XChange Viewer are of a similar quality, save for one glaring oversight: The free version of this tool does not allow for ground-up document creation. This extends to an inability to add or delete specific pages from a larger document. With that said, editing and annotation functions are abundant. Users can watermark their PDFs, annotate them in a variety of ways: text boxes, comments, attach relevant files and more.

Additionally, a knowledge base is available for those who need a little push to get up to speed with this tool.

PROS

* The PDF XChange Viewer is replete with editing and configuration options. Simply put, there is virtually no reason why a user won't end up with a PDF that looks exactly like he or she wishes, regardless of how minimal or extensive their editing needs might be.

* Word processing, PDF creation, and other such tasks are inherently lightweight, but it sill bears mentioning that the PDF XChange Viewer is anything but a resource hog. Users should experience little to no impact upon their computer's ability to run at desired levels of performance.

* The intro version of the PDF XChange Viewer utility is free!

* A portable version of this tool is available for those who would rather use it on a mobile device.

CONS

* The most glaring flaw in this tool is the inability of the user to create "from scratch" documents or to create and delete individual pages of a document.

* Help is available for users who want it, but it can be rather unhelpful at times. The tool itself isn't overly difficult to use, but some users may find themselves confused in the initial days and weeks following installation.

* Users must specifically disable undesired editing features. The fact that everything is turned on by default can lead to undesired effects, mistakes in the document, and so forth.

CONCLUSION

The PDF XChange Viewer is an acceptable PDF editor, but it could do with some updates. With that said, this tool is free, so users who need an entry-level tool of this type ought to at least investigate the XChange Viewer.
